Reset a Tripping RCD
Hopefully the below process will get you out of a hole to diagnose why your RCD or RCBO won't reset. It will work 90% of the time but there is always the anomaly. I hope this works for you and you find it useful.
A step-by-step guide
A tripping RCD will come at the most inconvenient time, and usually when you just don't need it. Sometimes it can be a very basic fix, whereas other times it will need a qualified electrician with the correct test equipment to fault find. Below is a 'first steps guide' that could save you the cost of calling out an electrician for what could be a simple fix.
If you try all of this and it still does not reset, then it's at that point you will need more expert eyes. Make sure you have a torch or similar to ensure you have maximum visibility when doing this.
To fault find a tripping RCD step-by-step: first turn off all circuit breakers (MCBs), reset the RCD, then turn the MCBs back on one by one to find the faulty circuit. The circuit that trips the RCD when switched on is the one with the fault. Once identified, leave that circuit off and contact a qualified electrician to investigate and repair it safely.
If you'd rather not tackle it yourself, or you've isolated the faulty circuit and need it sorted properly, get in touch and I'll come and fault find it with the correct test equipment.
